There are a number of cozy eateries on the grounds of the Ouzoud Waterfalls that specialize in serving you authentic Moroccan fare. You may either cross the river via the wooden bridge, or for a few dirhams, you can take a ride on one of the small boats that have been christened with humorous names like "Le France", "Le Phocéa", or "Le Titanic." In order to reach the southern foothills and desert plains of the Draa-Tafilalet area, you will need to pass the portion of the High Atlas Mountains known as Ait Benhaddou. This makes for an intriguing journey. Since 1987, UNESCO has recognized this historic location as worthy of inclusion on its list of World Heritage Sites.

The journey from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou takes around four hours and takes travelers through Berber communities and through winding roads to the highlands of the Ouarzazate Province across the Tizi N'Tichka pass, which is 2,260 meters in elevation. Prior to arriving to Ait Benhaddou, you will make a stop at the well-known Glaoui Palace, which has an admission cost of 20 MAD per person and may be visited if you so want.

Between Telouet and Ait Benhaddou is where you'll find the breathtaking salt valley of Ounila. This is without a doubt one of the most gorgeous valleys in all of southern Morocco.

Depending on how hungry you are, the first thing that you do is either have lunch or go on a guided tour around the historic village. On the way, you will cross the dry river and climb to the summit, where you will get breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Ait Benhaddou is a stronghold that is comprised of a collection of kasbahs, and it is the home of around eight families who are still now residing in the older portion of the ksar. The modern section of Ait Benhaddou is where the majority of the town's hotels, cafés, and restaurants are located. The entire location has a very lovely feel about it. You make your way back to Marrakech, where you will be transferred to your accommodation upon arrival.

ONE DAY TRIP FROM MARRAKECH TO OURIKA VALLEY

Departure by 4WD vehicle from Marrakech at 9:00 a.m. for one hour to Setti Fatma to enjoy the soothing waters of the seven waterfalls, passing through numerous Berber settlements and the Ourika Valley with multiple photo stops along the way.

Once we reach Setti Fatma, we will have lunch and take a short walk through some of the beautiful pathways, ascending over rock sculptures to the first waterfall, before returning to Marrakech by vehicle.

A day excursion to the Ourika Valley may afford you the opportunity to visit one of the weekly Berber Markets (Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays), which are interesting for their rural life and commerce. In the off-season, you'll likely be the only tourist there; it's a good experience and the most exotic thing you can discover inside a two-hour flight from a European country. The Berber markets are always divided into sections for meat, produce, dry goods, clothing, stationery, barbers, animals, donkeys, used goods, and just about anything else you can think of, complete with the vibrant colours and aromas you would expect from a weekly Berber market in a Berber village such as Asni or Amezmize.
